In A Rut- Part 2

You know quotes or verses that just make you feel some kind of way. The ones that pierce so deep into your heart that you just, it’s hard to sit still. This was one such statement in my life.

“My grace is sufficient for you, my power is made perfect in your weakness”

– 2 Corinthians 12:9

In my previous post I talked about the ‘thorn’ in our flesh. Something that we just want to pray away and not have to sit through, but how God is waiting to reveal something to us through this time.

There are 2 ways that you can get relief from this thorn. This thorn could be anxiety, depression, dysfunctional relationships, unknown purpose or just feeling bleh! Not we can either remove these troubles and ask God to do just that, or we can embrace the opportunity to let God strengthen us through these times so that we grow in our faith. Now either way, it’s not going to go away, so it is up to us how we see this thorn and the attitude that we are going to have towards it.

Paul pleaded many times with the Lord for the thorn to be taken away, yet it still persisted. However, God was not silent and He did answer, maybe just not in the way that Paul expected. He answered Paul with the verse stated above. Instead of removing the thorn God said that His grace was was going to be sufficient to meet Paul’s every need through this trouble. Paul HAD to believe that God’s grace was in fact sufficient because he knew that He understood that he was insufficient and did could not get through this in his own strength.

This was an important lesson. We can’t receive God’s strength and grace unless we acknowledge our weaknesses, unless we can put our hands up in the air and say “Yes, Lord I am weak. I need you.” Then we can receive the grace of God in our troubles and tribulations and know that, His grace is 100 percent enough to get us through it. Yet, if we think very highly of ourselves and refuse to be vulnerable before the Lord, then we are just going to end up riding the wave in our own strength and our own ways and end utterly confused and tired. Be vulnerable and receive God’s grace. Take a good long look at every aspect of your life, or what it is that you are specifically struggling with and see how God can take that weakness and turn it into a strength with His grace.

So what is this Grace and What can it do for Us? (taken from Enduring Word Commentary- David Guzik):

  • Grace expresses God’s acceptance and pleasure in us: This is not God punishing or afflicting you. God wants us to go through things so that we can be strengthened. He accepts you just the way that you are and He takes pleasure in you when you are vulnerable with Him and confess your sins and weaknesses to Him so that His grace and favor can work in your life.
  • It is available ALL the Time: God is everywhere, anytime, through all things. I learnt when I was very little that I can pray to God anytime and anywhere, which changed my life. He is available all the time and His grace is available all the time. No matter how much our earthly relationships fail us, God will always be there for us. Not to defend us from the trial but to hold our hand through it. We can reach out to Him at any time.
  • It is the very Strength of God: grace is not weak or wimpy, it is the power of God to fulfill what we lack and that is what gives us strength. What we lack can only be given to us through teaching, learning and growing and we cannot do any of those things unless we are tested. Neurons in our brain, if not used often enough can degrade away so when we face challenges or do things that really make us think, those connections in our brains are strengthen and it is the same for our lives. We cannot sit here and expect to grow in anything unless we face trials that test us.

So when we are in a rut, it is important to know that 1) The trial is given to us, not necessarily because of something we did wrong but maybe quite the opposite. That we are doing it so right that sometimes we need a reminder of our fallible human selves and our infallible God and 2) Though we must fight through this rut that we are in God’s grace is enough for us to give us the strength that we need to learn from our trials and to know that God’s power is in us, when we are weak. That is grace.

So. In A Rut? I was in a rut and it was not a nice thing to live through at all, because you seem to doubt everything that you thought was stable and you just cannot seem to find your way through the fog of it all. But remember that though you have this thorn in the flesh that just will not seem to go away, no matter how much you cry out to God…..He is listening, He is watching and His power will be revealed in you, if you are willing to be vulnerable with Him and ask Him for His grace. These are the times that you will see God at work in your life, don’t waste it.

When I realized this as I sat on that bench in the park, I cannot tell you the amount of release that I felt in my heart. Not a feeling of it being over, but the beginning of something new in my life. I felt different and I felt a sense of joy, so much that I am pretty sure I smiled all the way back to college and got some pretty weird stares!

“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Nehemiah 8:10

Hope you enjoyed these two blogs! I must admit it was a very complex and difficult thing to talk about and I have tried to do it as logically as I can but, I think sometimes the things that God reveals to you is a very personal thing and to share it with others can be a whole other level of strength and faith!

Stay Blessed,
